The Steering Rack is the part your vehicle uses to turn wheels. It is actually called rack and pinion steering and is the most common type of steering on cars, small trucks and SUVs.
Lighter sports cars have lower steering ratios than larger cars and trucks. This lower ratio actually allows for a quicker response. This simply means you don't have to turn the wheel as much in order to get your wheels to turn. This also makes for less effort required to turn the steering wheel. Bigger cars typically have higher steering ratios.
Some cars have variable ratio steering that uses a rack and pinion gear set. This allows the car to react quickly when starting a turn. Your Steering Rack is closer to the center which also reduces the effort near the wheels turning limits.
The rack and pinion provide a gear reduction which makes it easier to turn the wheel and converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion required to turn your wheels. On most cars it takes three to four complete steering wheel revolutions to turn the wheels all the way from the far left to the far right.
